Conceived for the eponymous exhibition project curated by Benedetta Carpi De Resmini, the volume Spaces of Resistance aims to capture in visual and reflective form the poetic and political intensity of the works on display at Rome’s Mattatoio from September 11 to October 12, 2025, positioning itself as both an artistic and theoretical extension of the exhibition.
Conceived as a small artist’s edition, the publication gives form to a visual narrative that traverses places marked by war and loss, but also by the tenacity of memory and the strength of reconstruction. The selected photographs do not merely document—they are themselves acts of resistance, visual forms capable of evoking identities in transition, wounded geographies, and collective processes of transformation.
Accompanying the visual narrative, a curatorial essay offers a critical reading of the works and practices of the participating artists, situating them within a broader discourse on the relationship between art, memory, and resilience.
Completing the publication, beyond the critical text, are the words of the artists themselves (Simona Barzaghi, Gea Casolaro, Romina de Novellis, Smirna Kulenović, Šejla Kamerić): statements, notes, and reflections that give voice to creative processes, subjective experiences, and the political perspectives that animate the works. The result is a hybrid and dynamic editorial form, capable of amplifying the evocative power of images and activating new readings, in the spirit of plurality and transformation.
